The carved stone artefacts in this store depict mostly people and animals. These pieces are chiselled, hand-carved, and polished by using an array of specialised equipment. The type of stones used come mostly from Zimbabwe and the Limpopo Province and they include serpentine black, fruit verdite, spring stone, opal, butter, and soap stone. Each stone has its own unique colour, and these artworks can be used both indoors and outdoors. This particular type of stone carving was started in the 1950s by the Shona tribe. The artist producing these carvings at the Stone Art Store is originally from Zimbabwe, where he learnt this craft as a child.
